Our Weekend: Pirates, prehistoric walks and Jurassic Park

Friday evening we ventured to one of Nick's favourite restaurants in PNU which he has suitably named the pirate bar. It's a tiny hodge podge of lots of different dimly-lit small buildings that surround a courtyard with the sound of water trickling by. The trees are overgrown and hang over you while you stuff your face with delicious pajeon and makeolli. It also helped that their used to be an endearingly grumpy old man that used to work there, but apparently he is ill at the moment so has moved out to the country to get some fresh air. I hope he gets better soon!

Following that we went to watch Dan do his stand up comedy, and I was in bed by 1:30 having popped into Basement to dance with Katie's friend who was visiting from England.

We got up bright and early on Saturday morning and headed to Beomosa Temple in the North of Busan. This is one of Busan's most well-known temples, perhaps because of the enormity of it, or maybe because it does special tours where you can stay over night and experience life in a buddhist temple.

It was unbelievably humid and there was lots of building work going on, so we didn't really spend as much time as we could have wandering around. Although we spent a bit of time walking through the prehistoric hibiscus trail (according to the signs) that they have within the temple grounds.

We rushed back down the mountain to get to Seomyeon just in time to catch Jurassic Park in 3D on the IMAX screen. Unfortunately my glasses were broken so I had to spend most of the film holding them to my face, but I did enjoy seeing it again, not sure if 3D added too much to the film though.

After some Jeju pig BBQ, i went home for a nap and ventured out later to meet yet more of Katie's friends from home on Gwangalli beach. We headed for a late dinner and then got home for about two.

Feeling lazy on Sunday morning we strolled into Nampo and went bowling. Unfortunately I turned out to be rubbish at it. It seems that the harder I try, the worse I get, so I decided to call it quits after two games, but the others carried on for yet another.

Only two weeks and two days until I'm free for a week and a half. I've already started having bad dreams about Summer camp, but the fretting about that can wait until I get back from Kuala Lumpur! Exciting!

Our Weekend

This weekend was mostly about makeolli drinking and kimchijeon devouring. Rainy day museum wandering. Brunch at 3pm. Roller derby and random British films. Has anyone seen the film Sightseers which is based in my home county, Yorkshire? Tasha recommended it. Very bizarre but made us laugh a lot.

I'm also lacking in photos this weekend as I didn't really take my camera out!

Our Weekend: Monster Cupcakes and Tim Burton

Train journeys are always fun when you have red wine and The Walking Dead to make it go faster. I'm a couple of episodes behind on the third season, and think that it's definitely the best season so far, what does everyone else think?

Saturday was really sunny and warm, so we strolled around Hongdae, got some lunch then headed to the Tim Burton exhibition and the Seoul Museum of Art. It was amazing. It shows pictures, videos and notes from when he was really young, up until his big blockbuster films. It was so interesting to see which ideas that he developed all those years that you can see influenced some of the characters in his movies that everybody loves now-a-days.

Feeling weary we headed to Edae to the Raintree Cafe that I had seen mentioned on Cute in Korea. We ordered some juice and a huge banana and walnut pancake that came with green tea ice cream, exactly what we needed to get our energy levels back up, just in time to meet our friends.

We went for dinner in Itaewon and went to a Speakeasy bar. Being a massive fan of Boardwalk Empire, I was really excited about this. There was a small eye slit cut into the door, and when the light's on, you're allowed to knock and see if they'll let you in. Luckily we got in. It was really dimly lit with candlelight, there was jazz music playing and hundreds and hundreds of bottles of whiskey lined the walls. Not being a big whiskey fan, I had an amaretto sour, then decided to be brave and try a whiskey sour. The bar guy, who told us his English name was Rocky insisted that adding an egg white to a sour drink made it better, and i have to say it was really tasty.

The next morning we met near Itaewon for brunch and I tried Eggs Benedict for the first time. It was so nice being able to get a really good Western breakfast eating out, something that is pretty rare in Busan. After this we went to the Monster Cupcake shop. I was completely spoilt for choice, all of the cupcakes were decorated amazingly, and the owner's cute little son was sat in the shop, munching on a severed finger, that was actually made out of biscuit. I went for the lemon cupcake decorated with an eyeball, and Nick took a coffee one with the chopped finger.

With just a few hours before our train, we decided to visit the Hanbok village. This is an area that has lots of well maintained traditional Korean housing. It was really nice to take a wander around, and the peaceful atmosphere really reminded me of Kyoto. After exploring the tiny winding streets, we came to the main road where there are lots of traditional tea houses, we sat outside in the sun and enjoyed our cupcakes and took a stroll through the park, back to the metro.

We ended our trip on a high note, after finding a shop that sold turd shaped cakes, which we couldn't resist! They tasted a lot better than they looked.

It was such a nice, relaxing weekend, and was great to discover a bit more of Seoul.

The Wizarding World of Warner Brothers: Harry Potter Tour

The penultimate day of my stay in England we packed up the car with all of my bags and started the trip down to Heathrow airport. We decided to stop off at Watford to visit the Warner Brother's studio where actual Harry Potter was filmed. I'm a massive fan of the books, and can take or leave the films, but it was still exciting to see everything in real life and learn some of the tricks of the films.
