Bolivia!

After what seemed like a long two months, we finally made it to Bolivia. We took a late night bus from Salta, and arrived at the border at 7 in the morning. It was surprising to see how different the very North of Argentina was, compared to the very European feeling Buenos Aires.

I used this blog to get some advice on crossing the border, but it turned out to be a lot easier than expected. We ate some leftovers breakfast on the wall while waiting for the border to open, even the street dogs turned their noses up at it when we offered them some.

We simply had to queue, get our passport stamped and fill out a form and we were free to enter Bolivia, much easier than the other border crossings that we had experienced.

It was early in the morning and cold and grey outside, there were lots of ladies dressed in the typical Bolivian dress huddled at the roadside trying to sell food and trinkets. We walked to the bus station where people stood at the pavement shouting out the destination they were selling, and we decided to go with one pushy lady. 2 hours later, and we'd arrived in Tupiza, our first port of call in Bolivia.

The hostel we had booked at, Los Salares, was pretty far out of the center of the town, but it was clean and the private rooms were the same price as we had been paying for dorms in Argentina, so we treated ourselves. The staff had knack of disappearing, but most of the time the hostel served us well.

We took a wander around the town, and through the dark market before settling on a restaurant which had been recommended to us called Il Banbino. I would definitely tell anyone to go there for lunch. We had a 3 course meal for just over £2. It was so good that we went back three times in the three days we were there.

Not wanting to forget the reason we were in the little town of Tupiza, we started to look around for tour companies offering the 4 day Uyuni Salt Flat tour, which was almost every company. We eventually decided on La Torre Tours. The prices were the same for all of the companies, but the lady in the office was really friendly and we'd heard good things about them from other people. Feeling pretty happy with our choice, we just had to wait for Vera and Simon to join us as the jeep takes 4 people.

Waiting 2 extra days wasn't too bad as we ate delicious food, experienced storms like I'd never seen before and went on a nice long hike. We managed to get lost on our walk to the CaƱon de la inca and managed to see a huge landslide. Luckily we were very far away from where it hapened, but it was so loud!

We were ready to leave Tupiza when we did, but the little town in amazing surroundings treated us well.
